Desktop 1.4.5 does not work with slow connections

With a slow connection, Desktop 1.4.5 is basically unusable. It would frequently drop out before the upgrade, but now it is even worse. I don't understand why it needs to check in with the internet so many times

We've made some improvements here and think the application should work well with a slow connection in the latest release (1.4.7). Could you take a look / let us know if you're still having problems?
